Spellbound Garden Writing & Consultation

Ed Lyon

Horticulturist, Lecturer, Instructor, Consultant, Photographer

M.S. Horticulture, University of Wisconsin - Madison

Director, Allen Centennial Gardens, University of Wisconsin - Madison, Wisconsin

News: I am pleased to announce that I have accepted a new position after 3 3/4 years with Rotary Botanical Gardens.  I am "coming home" to manage Allen Centennial Gardens on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus!  I feel it will bring me back to doing what I enjoy most, more hands-on horticulture and education.  I am pleased to to be working again with Dr. Dennis Stimart, who was my graduate advisor!

On any given day, Ed Lyon needs to check to see which horticultural hat he is wearing.  He is full-time Director for Allen Centennial Gardens, the teaching gardens for the University of Wisconsin - Madison, with previous positions as Executive Director of Rotary Botanical Gardens, Janesville, WI, Director of Education, Olbrich Botanical Gardens, Madison, Wisconsin and Symposia and Special Events Coordinator, Chicago, Botanic Garden.  He teaches and lectures across the Midwest for public and professional audiences on topics including plant materials and design.  He is a popular instructor for Master Gardener programs and symposia in Wisconsin, Illinois and Michigan.  He has written for both green industry and public magazines including American Nurseryman, Nursery Management Pro, Midwest Gardening, Chicagoland Gardening, and Milwaukee Home.  He currently writes a regular regional report for southern Wisconsin for Chicagoland Gardening.  His photography has appeared in all of the above as well as Northwest Quarterly, Chicagoland Gardening and the book Wisconsin Gardens & Landscapes.  His expertise in plant materials has been requested by writers representing Midwest Living, Northwest Quarterly and Chicagoland Gardening.  He has served as keynote speaker and plant expert for plant sales and garden openings in other botanic gardens.  He spent almost 10 years assisting a nursery that specialized in woody ornamentals and is an avid gardener.
